The plot follows a dollmaker named Samuel Mullins and his wife Esther who are grieving the loss of their young daughter Bee. Twelve years after her death they open their home to a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage. However the house is soon plagued by terrifying supernatural events as the possessed doll Annabelle targets the newcomers particularly a young girl named Janice.
