In late 2023, a fake "UnityEx Pro" crack was distributed via a popular torrent site. It contained a persistent backdoor that exfiltrated Unity project files, including proprietary game assets and API keys. Victims lost an average of $47,000 in intellectual property. Users of UnityEx Ultimate Verified were completely unaffected because the authentic version’s code-signing certificate prevented the malware from executing.
