Before Sudani from Nigeria (2018) and Kappela (2020), the standard Malayalam in films was the central Travancore dialect. These new films brought the guttural Malabar dialect, the harsh Kasargod slang, and even the Arabic-Malayalam mix of the Gulf migrants into the mainstream.
