However, tragedy strikes after a title defense. A rival fighter, Miguel "Magic" Escobar, insults Billy at a gala. A brawl ensues, and in the chaos, Maureen is accidentally shot and killed. Devastated, Billy spirals into depression, loses his wealth, his mansion, and, most painfully, custody of his daughter. Left with nothing but raw fury and broken hands, Billy must reconnect with a no-nonsense trainer named Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker) to reclaim his life, his dignity, and his daughter.
Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a powerful performance as Billy Banning, bringing depth and nuance to the character. Forest Whitaker is equally impressive as Eddie, Billy's wise and experienced trainer. Naomie Harris also shines as Maggie, Billy's estranged wife.
