The film follows Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), a rebellious and unmotivated young man who is forced to join the U.S. Navy after a botched attempt to impress a woman. Fast-forward a few years, Hopper is a lieutenant assigned to the Pacific Fleet for the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercises. Everything changes when an alien reconnaissance mission arrives on Earth. The aliens erect an impenetrable force field, cutting off a small fleet of Navy ships—including the USS John Paul Jones —from the rest of the world. With modern communication and GPS rendered useless, Hopper and his crew must resort to old-school naval warfare tactics, using ocean buoys as "pegs" on a giant grid to track and destroy the alien warships.
