I first watched this on a worn-out VHS tape in my 10th-grade English class. Mrs. Calhoun cried at the end, and so did half the football team. Looking back, the movie is a bit melodramatic, but the core message—that art and literature are matters of life and death—hit me exactly when I needed it to hear it.
