This tafsir has a unique historical background. In 1925, the newly established Turkish Republic’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı) commissioned Elmalılı to write a comprehensive Qur’an commentary in Turkish. The goal was to provide the Turkish public with a reliable, scholarly, yet accessible understanding of the Qur’an.
