The narrative follows Zainuddin (Herjunot Ali), an orphan of mixed Minangkabau and Bugis descent who travels from Makassar to his father's homeland in Batipuh, West Sumatra. There, he falls deeply in love with Hayati (Pevita Pearce), a beautiful woman of pure Minang aristocratic lineage. Their romance is quickly thwarted by rigid social traditions; because Zainuddin is not of pure Minang descent, he is considered an outsider with no recognized blood ties in the matrilineal Minangkabau society.
