The story begins with a prologue that shows the origins of the Golden Army and how it was stopped. The film then cuts to the present day, where Hellboy is living a relatively peaceful life with his friends and allies, including Liz Sherman (Naomi Watts) and Abe Sapien (Doug Jones). However, his life is disrupted when he meets a mysterious woman named Princess Nuala (Charlize Theron), who warns him about the return of the Golden Army.
